Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) has published its Annual Report for the financial year 2023/24.

The Annual Report is a review of our activity during the period running from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. It includes information about our performance, from clinical to financial. It describes our organisation, governance and leadership, and reviews the care we provided.

The document is divided into three sections. Part one is the performance report, in which we share our history, purpose and model, along with our strategy, mission and objectives. It also analyses our performance and activities.

Part two is the accountability report, covering how we are governed, led and organised. You can read here how we are accountable for the care we provide and what we were organisationally focused on this year.

Part three is the finance report, which includes our financial performance and status in 2023/24. Tables show how much funding we received, and what we spent – on delivering services to patients, maintaining our buildings and running the organisation, for example.

Introducing the Annual Report, Chief Executive Angela Hillery says: “As I reflect on the past year at NHFT, it’s clear that our Trust is resilient to all kinds of pressure, complexity, and challenge. We have continued to deliver high quality care with value, and I believe that comes from the strength of our people and partnerships. This strength is deeply rooted in our collaborative, compassionate culture. It’s a foundation that supports our people, partnerships, and capacity to serve the people of our communities.

“The year has presented many external challenges: the ripple effect of a global pandemic, cost of living crisis, and continued health inequality. With rising costs, demand for services and ongoing resource challenges, we have looked internally to our own supply and demand modelling. We must be fit for the future. Limits to financial resources mean we have had to think long and hard about what value is to NHFT. We will always prioritise safety and strive for outcomes over costs, and this year we have been working hard to empower our staff to innovate in all our services.

“Value does not mean saving money at any cost. Particularly in health and social care, it means delivering the highest quality, safely, and most efficiently. Looking to the future, we continue our journey of transition and transformation, to more innovative models. It’s why, even though we have been recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as an Outstanding Trust, we know how important it is to keep pushing forward and driving change through our value programmes.

“This is why partnership with community and providers – to share, save and align work – is critical, especially in these times. Partnership goes hand-in-hand with value and innovation. As we move away from the pandemic’s impact toward the future, we are forging strong partnerships and delivering more integrated care. This too needs collaboration and compassion.

“We will continue this focus during the following year – you can read more about this in our Annual Plan 2024/25.

“The demands we have been facing are arguably some of the most challenging in the NHS’s history. But as with all the challenges we have faced in recent times, we have met them head on, achieved so much and navigated our way through them, which we will continue to do.

“As I look back on the past year, it’s important to recognise our people and say thank you.

“Firstly, to our colleagues, who come to work day after day and, despite the ever-increasing pressures they face, continue to deliver compassionate, high-quality care to our communities. Their empathy, commitment, responsiveness to continual learning and unwavering dedication is humbling as well as inspiring, and I am exceptionally proud to work with them. Next, to our partners and the Northamptonshire system, who continue to play a vital role in helping us to serve the needs of our communities. From secure settings providing prison health care services to mental health collaboratives, our stakeholders, governors, system and partner colleagues work with us for better outcomes. Thank you, we appreciate all that you do.

“This Annual Report is much more than just a collection of numbers and statistics, it's a celebration of our collective efforts, our triumphs and disappointments, and the impact we've had on the lives of those we serve.”
