‘Love your smile’ and look after your oral health

‘Your smile is one of your best assets, so it’s important to love and protect it’!

That’s the message during National Smile Month, which runs from 13 May 2024 to 13 June 2024 which, this year, has the theme of ‘Love Your Smile’.

The annual campaign, led by the Oral Health Foundation and supported by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), is an opportunity for people across Northamptonshire to explore their hygiene routine and make sure they’re doing all they can to support their oral and dental health.

By learning more about how to achieve a healthy mouth, it’s possible to keep teeth for life, while protecting ourselves from other diseases.

Throughout National Smile Month, NHFT will be sharing tips and advice, through its social media channels, to help people maintain a healthy mouth.

To maintain a winning smile, people should:

  • Brush teeth for two minutes, spitting out the toothpaste, with no rinsing
  • Use interdental brushes and dental floss every day
  • Cut down on sugary snacks and drinks
  • Keep anything sweet or sugary to meal-times only
  • Chew sugar-free gum in between meals
  • Visit a dentist regularly

Jasmine Little, NHFT’s oral health promotion specialist, said: “Everybody deserves a healthy smile. A person’s oral health is a crucial part of their overall wellbeing. That’s why National Smile Month is a great opportunity to explore our oral health, and think about how we can improve it!”

National Smile Month is the perfect time to evaluate oral health, improve daily routines, and help others in the household do the same.

For children, it’s never too early to learn about the importance of great oral health and how to achieve it, and even if people have got into bad habits, it’s never too late for you to make a positive change and improve oral health.
